What Is Panchakarma ?

According to Ayurveda, our natural state is one of health, happiness and an inner sense of well-being. Health is defined as the body being clear of toxins, the mind is at peace, emotions are calm and happy, wastes are efficiently eliminated and organs are functioning normally. In a busy, stressful and toxic world, our physical and mental systems accumulate toxins causing deterioration in bodily functions. This eventually weakens our systems, which opens the door for chronic, degenerative, and non-specific diseases to develop. These can evolve into serious specific diseases, ultimately damaging an individual’s health and wellness.

Panchakarma literally means ‘five actions’ and it involves five different types of treatments to remove excess toxins and restore energy flow throughout all organ systems and tissues. This process cleanses the cell walls at the deepest levels, and further rebuilds immunity and strength.

Panchakarma is a cleansing and rejuvenating programme for the body and mind. It is known for its beneficial effects on overall health, wellness and self healing. Panchakarma aims to reverse the negative effects of day-to-day stress and environmental toxins by removing these toxins from your body and restoring balance to your system.

Panchakarma is used by Ayurvedic physicians as an effective treatment programme for a wide variety of health conditions and as a preventative measure. In common practice usually only parts of the Panchakarma regime is delivered which still achieves the desired effects.

How does it work?

According to Ayurvedic medical science there are five basic elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Space. These elements are present in our body and they work in harmony with each other to maintain a balanced body and mind. These elements combine to form the three Doshas or basic physiologiocal forces that govern all bodily functions. The three doshas are called as Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Each person has a unique blend of these doshas, which is why Ayurvedic treatment is always individualised. The disease is viewed as a state of imabalance in one or more Doshas within an individual.

Each of these Doshas has a precise energetic combination of the elements, has a primary site in the body, and tends to accumulate as excess in a particular organ. Kapha tends to accumulate in Stomach and Lungs, Pitta tends to accumulate in Gall bladder, small intestines and Liver, Vata tends to accumulate in Colon. Panchakarma is the complete detoxification process for these three Doshas from their acccumulating sites in the body.

How long is the process?

Actual panchakarma session lasts for 7 to 21 days and is tailored to your specific constitution and state of health. But Pre-panchakarma phase involves one week of home preperation with consumption of Herbal Medicated Ghee provided by us.

Also you need to follow specific tailor-made diet for 7 days after Panchakarama.

How does the process start?
Starting with a detailed consultation with our qualified Ayurvedic Doctor we gather information to identify your individual constitution and present condition at a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level. Accordingly the practitioner will choose treatments and herbs for your Panchakarma programme which will most efficiently induce a state of natural balance.

What can be involved in the process?

In panchakarma, there are two main types of therapy. Shamana is the supportive therapies that include the preparation and post-therapy measures. The main treatment is called Shodhana and refers to panchakarma's five main cleansing and elimination procedures. During preparation for panchakarma, oil therapy (termed snehana in Ayurveda) is the first phase. Patients are given oil massages — Abhyanga is full body massage and Sirodhara is forehead massage. They are fed dietary oils to lubricate the digestive tract, and are sometimes administered oil enemas. Oil therapy may be used for up to a week before the main treatment. Sweating therapy (swedana) is another preparation that uses saunas, steam rooms, heated clothing, herbal poultices (Kizhi/Navarakizhi) and exercise.

The five main methods of panchakarma are therapeutic vomiting (vamana), purgation (virechana), enema therapy (niruha basti for medicated enemas and anuvasana basti for oil enemas), nasal cleansing (nasya) and bloodletting (Raktamokshana) - though the latter is rarely performed due to various contraindications. Depending on the health problem, one or more of these methods are used to cleanse the body and promote healing. Other Ayurvedic therapies may be used in conjunction as well.

After cleansing methods are performed, patients go through an important aftercare stage called paschata karma. Patients are advised to rest, avoid certain activities, and often receive attention from nurses and doctors. Psychological care and counseling may be part of the healing program, as panchakarma strives to cleanse the patient of emotional problems in addition to physical ones. Patients are also counseled about preventative practices. Dietary changes are carefully planned, and lifestyle considerations are examined and recommended. Exercise programs, such as yoga, and stress-management techniques including meditation, may be introduced to patients during or after panchakarma, and herbal remedies may be prescribed as well.
